Having done incubation, I've watched many projects go from an idea to reality. -1 to 0, 0 to 1, 1 to 100 — each leg requires completely different people.
Because I run incubation programs, I've watched tons of projects go from a raw idea to an actual thing. -1 to 0, 0 to 1, 1 to 100 — these three stages require completely different kinds of people. I recently saw a tweet arguing that Chinese entrepreneurs are world-class at going from 1 to 100, but can't do 0 to 1. Kind of interesting — I'd say it's maybe half right (?). Chinese founders are genuinely fierce at execution. Supply chain integration, user growth, localized operations, price wars — once this playbook hits a certain scale, it's a steamroller. Pinduoduo, ByteDance, DJI — taking a proven model and pushing it to the absolute limit is something Chinese teams do incredibly well. But I don't really agree with the "can't do 0 to 1" take — or rather, it conflates two different things: not being good at 0 to 1, and not having the motivation to do 0 to 1. A lot of student founders I've met through incubation aren't lacking ideas — they just have no idea whether what they came up with actually counts. A little tool they vibe coded, a piece of lab tech, a direction they brainstormed in a dorm room — they're not sure if it qualifies as a "startup," so most of the time they just... stop there. This isn't a 0-to-1 capability problem. It's that the road from -1 to 0 is blocked. Chinese entrepreneurs might not be great at 0 to 1, but more likely, there just hasn't been a cheap enough environment to practice -1 to 0. What even is -1 to 0? It's that stretch where someone goes from "I have an idea" to "I'm working on something." That stretch doesn't require money or technology — it requires awareness. You need to know where your idea sits in the market, you need to have met real founders, you need to know where to find your first user. This is exactly why I started NEIC and Emerge. Not to hype students into going all-in on startups, but to close the information gap on that stretch of the road. Help more people get to "0" first, then we can talk about 0 to 1. Back to the tweet's core thesis — Chinese people are better at 1 to 100. I agree, but I don't think that's a flaw. 0 to 1 demands contrarian judgment. 1 to 100 demands extreme execution. These two capabilities rarely coexist in the same person, and they're even harder to find in the same cultural DNA. Silicon Valley moves fast on 0 to 1 because it has a whole fault-tolerance system — failure isn't shameful, VCs are willing to bet on contrarian ideas, and big companies won't immediately copy you. China's startup ecosystem doesn't yet have that fault-tolerance system for 0 to 1. That's both a people problem and a systemic problem. "Industry-academia collaboration," "technology transfer," "genius student founders," "veteran operators leaving big tech to start up"... every pathway has founders with distinct characteristics, and a good ecosystem should be precisely tailored to each type. It's just way too hard for college students to get their first check at school, way too hard for disruptive innovations to emerge bottom-up... In other words, we should be able to incubate young geniuses who might lack real-world experience; we should be able to actually commercialize cutting-edge research... We're still so far from that. This AI wave might be a bit different though. I'm seeing a lot of young geniuses and grassroots founders. There are Gen Z serial entrepreneurs, Gen Alpha founders with a global vision from day one, crazy early-stage ideas getting funded, and more young people carving out their own alpha at the most elite levels. As someone building startup ecosystem infrastructure, I'm pushing some young and unconventional things forward; As an observer of this space, we also want to let things play out a bit longer before passing judgment.
AI Era: Liberal Arts Students, Stop Thinking of Yourselves as "Liberal Arts"
2026.5
Proactively go where AI tools can amplify your judgment, instead of waiting for a "zero-base beginner's guide" to tell you that you can do it too. Stop thinking of yourself as a liberal arts student — just be someone who can still judge what's right in the AI era.
There's a narrative floating around the internet that seems to be written by liberal arts students, for liberal arts students: "Liberal arts students can learn AI from zero too!" "You can use AI for XX even without coding!" "STEM thinking isn't a prerequisite!"... The intention behind this kind of content might be good, but the underlying logic is deeply flawed. While saying "you can do it too," it implicitly accepts one thing: technology is the standard, and you're just trying to reach it. Liberal arts students are a group that needs to be comforted, needs to be told "actually, you can do it too." This is self-diminishment within a tech-supremacist narrative framework — just a gentler version of it. I've never once thought of "liberal arts" as a background that needs to be overcome. The real question isn't "can liberal arts students use AI" — it's what the stuff in liberal arts students' hands is actually worth after AI showed up. What AI is compressing is standardized cognitive labor — organizing information, writing templated copy, producing data reports. The barrier to these tasks has been massively lowered, which also means the value of simply executing them is shrinking. So the challenge AI poses to liberal arts students isn't "should you learn to code or not." It's whether you're willing to stop using "I'm a liberal arts student" to explain why you don't do certain things. Not knowing code isn't a problem. But if you use "I'm a liberal arts student" as a shield, what you're actually doing is: in an era where capability boundaries are being rapidly restructured, voluntarily drawing yourself a cage from a bygone era. Some of my favorite AI products — their core insights don't come from technology, but from understanding people. What kind of interaction makes someone feel offended, what kind of narrative makes someone willing to pay, what kind of product design makes someone open it every day... Claude is my favorite model. Maybe you think Anthropic hiring a bunch of philosophers to write an "AI constitution" is just PR artistry, but as a very sensitive user, I can genuinely feel that Claude's understanding of my less-engineering-oriented thoughts surpasses Gemini and GPT. One more tangent: the liberal arts vs. sciences split was probably the best practice for social production after WWII and the Second Industrial Revolution — the most efficient division of labor for achieving instrumental rationality. But now we're in the AI era, we're talking about a young narrative, and whether the expansion of instrumental rationality can match the narrative of the AI era is perhaps still up for debate... Proactively go where AI tools can amplify your judgment, instead of waiting around for a "zero-base beginner's guide" to tell you that you can do it too. Stop thinking of yourself as a liberal arts student — just be someone who can still judge what's right in the AI era. That's enough.

This was Ningbo's very first city-level hackathon. Over two days we gathered a hundred contestants and several hundred spectators. The head of the Douyin AI Changemaker Program personally came to run a seminar. We also invited the two co-founders of ZJU's Delta X Iterative Future Incubator and ZJU x-lab to talk about the innovation and startup ecosystem, and brought in three Tsinghua alumni — the founder of AA Accelerator, the head of TusStar (Hangzhou), and the founder of Hangzhou Zhizhou Yiyue — to hold an OPC forum... We saw quite a few highlights: For example, a student who transferred from a vocational college could build something fun, excellent, even great; For example, a single team of 4 might come from 4 different countries; For example, our staff were super proactive and committed to making the hackathon happen; For example, guests flew in from Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou just to support young people and changemakers; For example, friends we'd met across different fields and stages of life all showed up to be part of it; For example, people from big tech companies, incubators, professors, and college students could all just vibe and talk together; For example, we actually contributed something small but genuinely "new" to the government-industry-academia-research-business ecosystem, as students; For example, we're genuinely shaping an atmosphere of innovation and change-seeking in Ningbo. But at the same time, we noticed some phenomena worth reflecting on: In the AI era, hackathons in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou are practically overflowing. Startup activities pack community groups every single day. College students are broadly active in startup communities and the early-stage scene. But in Ningbo — sitting right on the eastern coast, relatively economically developed, steeped in the Zhejiang merchant spirit of innovation — this was the very first time young people proactively brought in a city-level AI hackathon. (其中,有太多朋友在这个过程中问我们"什么是黑客松?")(其中,有太多朋友在這個過程中問我們「什麼是黑客松?」)(And way too many friends asked us during the process: "What even is a hackathon?") From large language models, agents, to vibe coding, MCP, RAG, skills, harness engineering, AI native, super-individuals, OPC... the buzzwords of the AI era iterate insanely fast, and emotions like excitement, anxiety, confusion, and FOMO are spreading everywhere. 同時,AI初創變多了,年輕創業者變多了,美元募資回暖,高校學生對新領域好奇心上升,AI等新創活動越來越多……Meanwhile, AI startups are multiplying, young founders are multiplying, USD fundraising is warming back up, college students are increasingly curious about new fields, and startup events around AI keep growing... When new people, new money, new communities, new incubators, new ecosystems, and new content are all emerging right now — how should we make ourselves happen? Last summer (between freshman and sophomore year), I did an internship in Beijing's Zhongguancun related to the VC/startup ecosystem, researching the people, projects, investment firms, communities, and college student groups in frontier tech. After that I kept going to all kinds of community maker fairs, hackathons, and similar events, and connected with a ton of interesting people. That was basically my first real exposure to this whole ecosystem. This AI wave showed me a really vibrant ecosystem. But I also realized that college students are way too far from industry — too far from the market, from real demand, from users, from actual use cases. This isn't anyone's fault — it's the result of many factors working together. We see: students with creative potential who lack the tools to turn imagination into reality. We also find: students who've already built real products but can't connect to commercialization resources. An entrepreneurship class, a random idea, a business plan for a competition, a little toy vibe-coded into existence, a result sitting in a lab... for a truly commercializable startup, these could be a 1, could be a 0, and more likely a -1. Some information, education, guidance, methodologies, and events... maybe they're just not pointing in the right direction. So great ideas, innovations, creations, and ventures end up stuck in the lab or on a business plan document. The reasons behind this are probably complex — hard to pin on any single actor or phenomenon. But methodologically speaking, we really need bottom-up student communities to drive the building of this atmosphere. In other words: let young people do young things. So when I got back to school last October, I founded NEIC — the UNNC Venture & Innovation Club — a community connecting college students with industry in the VC and AI space. It's Ningbo's first, and one of the rare independent, grassroots student groups of its kind in China to come out of a university. We currently have 800 members, 180 core members, have organized 5 events, and built up over 30 partners. 很好的一點是,至少對一部分人來說,我們的社員有時會跟我說我們的社群真實地幫到了他,幫他找到了項目早期的方向、去到哪裡實習的方向、應該如何獲取哪部分資訊的方向、怎麼獲取好的活動的方向……One really good thing is that, at least for some people, members sometimes tell me our community genuinely helped them — helped them find early direction for their projects, figure out where to intern, learn how to access the right information, how to find good events... 0」。A product going from idea to publicly launched, a startup securing its first round of funding... that's the legendary "0 to 1." But as we dug deeper into the university startup ecosystem, we found that very few students can even properly reach "0." What everyone actually needs is how to go "from -1 to 0." What's needed is a culture where students proactively seek out information, resources, and connections from the bottom up; It's about students channeling their boundless energy, potential, and intellect into more creative real-world practice; 是學生從在學生思維中自我禁錮到利用學生身份創造一切的認識……It's about students breaking free from the self-imposed cage of "student mentality" and realizing they can leverage their student identity to create anything... Achieving this requires bottom-up pioneering — students need to start from what they've learned, what they know, and what they think, and connect with industry and the frontier. From -1 to 0" is essentially what NEIC does: we empower our members through daily, layered, diverse information sharing (covering AI frontiers, VC reports, tech reports, curated internship JDs, startup event info, etc.), hosting events, and supporting projects from -1 to 0. We also bring in startups, communities, companies, incubators, and investment firms for ecosystem-level collaboration on content and events. BP。We've launched multiple online and offline events, and we've watched students from different majors and industry people from different fields speak freely at intimate gatherings of a few dozen people. After events, people keep connecting with each other, reluctant to leave, discussing tech, entrepreneurship, the future... Maybe this seems small, but just six months ago, 99% of the liberal arts and business students around me told me AI was way too far from them, and that "entrepreneurship" basically meant writing a business plan for a competition. We believe what NEIC is doing is meaningful for at least some people, so we plan to deeply embed this atmosphere into all universities in Ningbo. That's why we're launching the first sci-tech innovation community covering all Ningbo universities: Emerge. The Future — How Do We Make It Happen? Emerge is a sci-tech innovation community rooted in Ningbo, initiated by university youth. It brings together students from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Ningbo University, Zhejiang Wanli University, Ningbo University of Technology, and NingboTech University. Focused on frontier tech like AI, it's a young community building a city-specific innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. We want to make ideas, innovation, creation, and entrepreneurship originate from and be realized by college students: For enthusiasts in this space, we'll promote tech accessibility through high-quality AI-related content in our community, co-learning sessions on AI, discussion forums, hands-on workshops, and other activities to raise awareness of AI, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and spark new ideas. For founders and builders who already have mature ideas, clear direction, and teams — the relatively more ready ones — we help projects land by connecting them with universities, government, communities, incubators, and other resources. 【欢迎宁波高校学生与我们共创!】【歡迎寧波高校學生與我們共創!】[All Ningbo university students are welcome to co-create with us!]

NEIC has since evolved from a student group into a connector across consumer, enterprise, and government sectors — and is about to incorporate.]
On October 1st, 2025, I founded the NEIC — the Nottingham Ningbo Venture Club. We're essentially a grassroots student organization, working at the intersection of venture capital, AI, and frontier tech. We're planning to figure out a clear business model and incorporate as a company by 2026. Right now, our positioning and functions are: 1️⃣致力于为宁诺等高校学生提供前沿创业交流与技术实践平台; 2️⃣为企业提供相关产品验证、推广、曝光平台; 3️⃣为VC、初创、社区提供人才支持; 4️⃣尤其是为初创项目组提供多维度"孵化"支持1️⃣致力於為寧諾等高校學生提供前沿創業交流與技術實踐平台; 2️⃣為企業提供相關產品驗證、推廣、曝光平台; 3️⃣為VC、初創、社區提供人才支持; 4️⃣尤其是為初創項目組提供多維度「孵化」支持1️⃣ Providing a platform for cutting-edge entrepreneurial exchange and hands-on tech practice for students at UNNC and other universities; 2️⃣ Offering companies a platform for product validation, promotion, and exposure; 3️⃣ Supplying talent to VCs, startups, and communities; 4️⃣ And especially providing multi-dimensional "incubation" support for early-stage project teams Right now we have 160+ official members, 400+ prospective members being observed in our recruitment group, 50+ admins, and 30+ partners we've connected with — mainly university entrepreneurship associations, startup communities, AI open-source communities, startups, media outlets, and so on. Within about two months of launching, we held 3 events. The first was a hackathon co-organized with WaytoAGI, Bonjour, and Zion — 7 projects went from idea to demo, and 3 of them are still going (not easy, but it was probably the first time UNNC ever did an AI hackathon in collaboration with communities and startups). The second was a Halloween-themed campus battle royale — nothing to do with venture or AI, purely for fun, organized by my CMO, and it was a huge hit. The third was a fireside chat with Ms. Liu Xiang, the investment lead at XbotPark (Ningbo), along with two founders in their incubator — mainly a deep exchange to give everyone a reality check on hard tech and innovation/entrepreneurship. I've always liked the idea of "entrepreneurship." At first it was simply because I found it interesting and challenging — I loved creating a concept, building a system. And yeah, I wanted to make money. Big money. In elementary school, I sold a 220,000-character martial arts novel I'd written at a charity sale and generated 60% of my class's total revenue. After that, my classmates and I got into inventing things — we even tried to build a tinfoil phonograph. In middle school, I was really into reading classics, so I started a little nonprofit "private community" where a bunch of us would talk about literature and history. In high school, I devoured business books and videos. I told myself "I'm going to start a business" countless times but had no idea where to begin. The summer before college, I wanted to monetize my knowledge, so I spent a month hand-typing exclusive mind maps. I also freelanced as a geography tutor without going through any agency. During freshman year, while studying economics myself, I tutored international students in AP Economics. (One kid from a Haidian school who used my mind maps and gave them a thumbs up got into Tsinghua — so I guess the quality of my stuff was decent.) In the first semester of freshman year, I started dabbling in AI. During finals week, I wrote prompts and teamed up with GPT to sell OCSA review materials — sold 50+ copies in a day and made over 1k RMB. (One classmate who used my mind maps scored 90, so again, quality verified.) Second semester of freshman year, I worked on a project at the maker lab and scraped into the school's top 10, but didn't crack the top 5 so we got no funding. Those final sprint days were brutal — our team eventually dwindled to just two people. Every day I'd be in the library applying for internships, picking up calls, doing interviews, AND working on the project, all on 4 hours of sleep. I was a mess... But on the bright side, even though the project died, I learned a ton, and I landed an internship that was closely related to innovation and entrepreneurship. The summer between freshman and sophomore year, I interned on Zhongguancun Startup Street, working on the venture ecosystem. I researched innovation and entrepreneurship clubs and schools at top universities in Haidian, high-quality startup and AI communities across China, and various startup projects and incubators — over 200 entities in total. Two things people said stuck with me. The first was from researching university entrepreneurship associations: what we need is real incubation of projects with commercial potential, not textbook-style innovation education. The second was from a startup community: young people, especially college students, should be doing more entrepreneurship-related stuff because this is when opportunity cost is at its lowest. That summer internship is also when I started doing Coffee Chats — grabbing meals and talking with people from big tech companies, financial institutions, and universities in Beijing. I kept the habit going after I came back to UNNC. The day after my internship ended, I went to Guangzhou for the wteam AI Maker Festival, where I had a blast chatting with startup founders, investors, and community folks. Then on September 24th I went to S-Innovation in Shanghai; September 25th, Apsara Conference in Hangzhou. After a few intense conversations at the end of the month, I officially founded NEIC on October 1st. (On the topic of maker and AI festivals — I later went to Google Devfest in Hangzhou, the ModelScope Open Source Conference... I really enjoy going to these events.) So far, the university organizations, communities, and startups we've connected and collaborated with include SEDA (Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Entrepreneurs Association), Wenzhou-Kean University Career and Innovation Association, UNNC Maker Lab, UIBEAIA; Bonjour!, WaytoAGI, Datawhale, Mindverse, Guancha (Agent Universe) Hangzhou AI Workshop, Zion, XbotPark, ModelScope Community, Ningbo Micro Film Association, several partner communities (the largest in Ningbo), Yiyou Youth (Chushan Ventures), AISPIRE (AI research tools), HyperKnow... We might look like we're based in Ningbo, but our admins are in Hangzhou, Beijing, London, and beyond — and our members are literally all over the world. If you ask me what's left the deepest impression on me, my answer would be "people." People are the most fundamental thing. The more powerful AI gets, the more important people become — and a venture club can bring people together, people who are relevant to this space. A major VC told me that when they evaluate projects, the most important thing is the people, and they start watching people when they're young. A really successful incubator said that in their criteria, what matters most is the person — what this person themselves wants to do. All the flashy external metrics, impressive resumes, and big titles don't hold a candle to who the person actually is. The venture and AI circle isn't that big; everyone kind of knows everyone. But more than knowing a lot of people, what I care about is having deep interactions with them. I love talking — my good friend Aze and I regularly chat for 6 hours straight (our record is 13 hours non-stop). We can go from random topics to venture and AI stuff and back again. The first time I met Xu Haoyun, the president of SEDA at XJTLU, we talked from midnight to 6 AM (and I was simultaneously doing military training and studying for the GRE — surreal). The second time I met Zhongtai, the founder of Guancha, we experienced a post-00s founders' dinner — I loved that vibe. A couple of days ago, I had a meeting with the founder of HyperKnow and realized she's the same age as me... Every time I do a Coffee Chat with a new friend, I don't go in with a strong agenda. I just go to feel people out. Of course, wherever there are people, real needs emerge.

The tension between 'value rationality' and 'instrumental rationality' is well worth thinking about today, too.
